In his first season with the Dodgers, in 2004, he only played 89 games, but one of them happened to be Saturday, October 2nd, in a Yhency Brazoban start against the Giants. In the bottom of the 9th inning, the Dodgers were down by three and hadn’t scored all game. Shawn Green led off the inning against Dustin Hermanson, singling to left field. Robin Ventura came up and worked the count full before walking. In what can only be described as a perfectly apt Cora thing to do, Alex Cora came up and struck out looking. Jose Hernadez came in as a pitch hitter for David Ross, worked the count full against Hermanson, and drew a walk. Dodger great (if you can count one game in 2005 vs Brad Radke and the Twins as being great) Hee Sop Choi drew a bases loaded walk against Hermanson, forcing in a run to make it 3-1, and knocked Hermanson out of the game in favor of Jason Christiansen. Cesar Izturis batted next, the only batter Christiansen faced that day, and reached on an error by the defensive replacement SS Cody Ransom, scoring Robin Ventura. Matt Herges comes in for the Giants to replace Christiansen and face Jayson Werth. Werth had a magnificent at-bat, requiring Herges to throw him eight pitches. On the last one, Werth drove a single into RF to score Hernandez and keep the bases loaded. He had evened up the score 3-3. Obviously, I was out of my fucking mind with excitement, dancing in the aisles kind of joy.</p> <p><span>Before the game had started, as was my custom at the time, I waited over by where the Dodgers warmed up, on the first baseline. I loved being near the players, talking to them and taking pictures with them. I never asked them to sign anything or really wanted anything, I just wanted to be over there and in the thick of it all. On this particular October 2nd, I had gone over and talked to Jayson Werth and told him it was my birthday, my 15th. I talked to him quite a bit during that season, even if it was nothing more than telling him I was rooting for him or to have a great game. All this was to say nothing of the sign I once bullied my friends into holding up with me, the clever “Jayson: Making Dodger Games Werth-while”. Presumably, though, because he was a nice dude, he wished me a happy birthday and I was the happiest I’d ever been. A theme of my youth that no longer rings true was that every experience I had was the best experience of my life, and I was over the moon to have one of my favorite ballplayers wish me a happy birthday. I think, or am inventing, that I said something about playing good on my birthday, or something. Frankly, I’m embarrassed but hey, I’d only been 15 for like a few hours or something, so give me a break. </span></p> <p><span>But when he hit that single to right field, a totally regular, game tying but not winning hit, I was so god damned happy. I knew it was for me! It was my birthday and my team was coming back and my favorite player just hit in the game tying run for me! It was so fucking cool.</span></p> <p><span>Cool beyond belief, like, to the point that I completely erased the fact that Steve Finley came up after Werth, against Wayne Franklin who had replaced Herges, and hit a game winning Grand Slam. Yeah. I totally blanked on the fact that someone hit a walk-off Grand Slam on my birthday.</span></p> <p><span>Because Jayson Werth hit a measly single to right field. </span></p> </blockquote> <p>A great story about Werth!
